LEARN HOW A TORONTO GIRL WITH A FARMER SOUL RAISES CHICKENS IN THE CITY
HI, I’M SANDRA
My story is probably similar to yours…first-generation Canadian who LOVES living in this gorgeous city and incredible country. Been a Toronto girl since birth and I’m not going anywhere any time soon, but I want it all! I want the fast-paced and exciting city life, AND the pure, slow pace of a country setting.
More importantly, I want to be connected to nature and the Earth, and I want my kids to experience what I had growing up as a child of Portuguese immigrants.
Growing up, we always had chickens in our backyard and fresh organic eggs in our kitchen. Though we lived in the 6, our tiny yard was a country oasis where every day I fed the chickens, and they fed me. Together, we fed the garden that provided all of us with a bounty of fresh fruit and vegetables. It was a taste of a simpler country life in Portugal my parents had grown up with, and it is a life that this beautiful city and country allows its residents to have.
I recreated this oasis in my own backyard, and for the last 15 years I’ve proven that keeping chickens in a city like Toronto is possible and even easy!
I welcome you into my backyard, my coop, and my life to show you what my Toronto looks like.
MY MISSION
To raise awareness of the health and environmental benefits of
backyard chickens in an urban environment.
To provide a model of urban sustainability.
To show the world that chickens are intelligent, beautiful, and extraordinary!
